CMO2Go Legal Marketing Recruiting Trends ft. Jason Caramanico

Jan 21, 2026

I recently had the opportunity to share my thoughts on the recruiting outlook for legal marketing in 2026 with CMO2Go,Inc..

Contributing alongside some esteemed legal industry recruiting colleagues, the consensus is that hiring in 2026 will be cautious yet intentional, with firms taking a strategic approach to building marketing and business development teams.

Here are some key takeaways:

- 2025 started slow but finished strong. Political and economic uncertainties led to initial hesitation, but hiring steadily picked up in the later half of the year. In 2026, we expect it to be a busy year for recruiting business professionals in law firms.

- The mid-level talent war continues. Strong demand at the Manager and Senior Manager level is here to stay. These professionals execute strategy, build cohesive teams, and keep operations running smoothly.

- Client relationship roles leveraging AI are the future. BD professionals who truly understand client relationships and how to integrate AI into service delivery will be best positioned to add value.

- The generalist vs. specialist divide widens. The gap between Big Law specialists and midsize firm generalists is creating complexity on both sides of the talent market.

- Hybrid work is a competitive differentiator. While three in-office days remain common, some firms are moving to four-day requirements. This is motivating professionals to seek more flexible schedules, and firms offering that flexibility have a clear advantage.

- New leadership pathways are emerging. BD professionals are increasingly moving into operations roles, while CMOs are elevating to COO positions. Layering skills across disciplines recognizes the strategic value these leaders bring to the business of law.

- Cross-industry movement is increasing. Hiring from other professional services environments, such as financial institutions, the Big Four, and large consulting firms will continue.
