Innovation is an important differentiator in the legal industry.
It’s no secret that law firms aren’t known for driving change. To the contrary, they often rely on precedent when making business decisions. Although precedent isn’t necessarily an enemy to innovation, I think a lack of urgency to innovate is.
Recent research shows that nearly half of all law firms admit they’re lagging when it comes to innovation. In fact, just 13% of law firms see themselves as extremely innovative despite clients facing unprecedented change—in particular when it comes to AI adoption. New data shows that half of law firms are optimistic about using AI and another quarter are cautiously optimistic. This is movement in the right direction, but there is still a lot of progress to make.
In a recent post, I talked about how small firms are positioned to gain the most in early AI adoption. Zooming out a bit further, innovative thinking is more than simply adopting AI.
A few observations:
Truly innovative law firms have common traits, including hiring strong business professionals. Importantly, they empower these professionals to direct the firm’s business strategies, using Gen AI to automate where appropriate. In a nutshell, these firms use innovation for identifying and defining client experiences.
The clients who hire innovative firms seek legal advice that isn’t just based on precedent, but rather on how proven approaches can be reimagined using AI to get faster answers, smarter insights, and better results.
Successful firms understand that innovation isn’t just about how firms use technology internally but rather how they curate client experiences and deliver tangible results. The most innovative firms are providing clients with expedited work products that expand thinking.
Smart law firms are using the innovation gap as a competitive advantage. They're challenging their marketing leaders to define and deliver innovation, make AI fluency part of their daily work, and position business development as a differentiator.
The bottom line: clients will always choose innovative lawyers because they can deliver measurable business impact. Firms that define innovation by outstanding client outcomes will have a real competitive advantage.
