When Business Support Stops Being Optional

Jun 01, 2026

I work with law firms at every stage of growth, and one pattern consistently stands out among small and boutique firms: attorneys try to do everything themselves. Too often, that approach continues far longer than it should until eventually, something has to give.

There is a point when bringing in dedicated business support stops being optional.

Recognizing the signals that it’s time can make all the difference:

Billable hours are being lost to administrative work. There are direct costs to the firm when partners are managing invoicing, coordinating outside resources, or troubleshooting office logistics. Having professionals who handle business tasks that fall outside of legal advice frees up lawyer time for business development and serving existing clients.

Opportunities slip through the cracks. When referral sources wait to hear from you or prospective clients are not followed up on, firms miss out on potential work. It’s important to realize that growth doesn't stall all at once, it quietly erodes while causing additional stress on attorneys who feel like they don’t have time to do it all.

Your systems are inconsistent or nonexistent. Small firms greatly benefit from systematic processes for billing, client intake, documentation, business development and more. Business professionals not only establish processes, they also help attorneys build habits that allow a practice to grow.

Lateral hiring is reactive. Without operational support, recruiting and onboarding lateral attorneys and their clients falls on lawyers who are already stretched thin. Small firms have no room for making bad hires or losing good lawyers because integration fails.

Leadership is stuck in reaction-mode. When attorneys spin their wheels putting out fires, a firm can’t possibly build their presence and practice. This existence is more about surviving and that is not satisfying, nor sustainable, for anyone.

Hiring (and empowering) a strong business operations professional can help deliver important impact quickly. The biggest relief may be that these professionals protect partner time, helping them focus on billable work, client service, and business development.

The good news is that boutique firms have more options than they realize, and the relief tends to come faster than expected.
